It's a mentals vs physicals dichotomy here.Īnd all of these templates are for DM use, anyway, and not available to players.Ī target killed by this damage rises up as a zombie at the start of your next turn. I mean, the average zombie is tougher than the average commoner it might be made from, so I don't see why a zombie dragon, a creature whose stat block prominently features STR and CON, shouldn't be stronger than a living dragon of the same kind. ![]() I mean, it's not like there is a RAW way for players to make dragon zombies or dracoliches, so I don't think there's much of an argument there, but for a dragon, becoming a zombie and becoming a dracolich isn't much different, stat-wise, except that they retain their stats, no? In most cases, wouldn't the STR and CON buffs be a greater boon than the mental debuffs' negatives? I mean, the average adult dragon stays smarter than the average adult white dragon, even with the Zombie template IIRC.Ī zombie dragon fulfills a different role than a dracolich, to be sure, but I don't see why they can't be on a similar power level if it fits the scenario. The archmage and assassin are exceptions for the strength of the NPCs at the back of the book, and if run as zombies are intended RAW neither will be hugely powerful (not like a dracolich or a dragon with the zombie template) Now ofcourse a DM can change things for their game, but as I said before a Dracolich is a pure powerup for a dragon and the zombie template doesn't really impact it in the way that creatures like the beholder zombie suggest was intended by the game designers.Īs the DMG says, the NPC features are designed to help convert NPCs at the back of the book. The idea is that zombies are generally mindless creatures that follow your commands in a basic sense, other types of undead fill the more complex roles. Letting players turn dragons they defeat into even stronger dragons is a bit nuts.ģ) When it comes to NPC scaling I was talking more about how the abilities/stats scale than anything else. The only problem is lasts for a hour.ġ) Are liches basically zombies? Dracoliches retain nearly everything about them as dragons and just gain power with the template, because it is a power up for a dragon just like lichdom is for any other creature.Ģ) It isn't so much the CR (although that is important to consider as well) but that zombies have specific characteristics and effects on the CR of the base creature in most cases. Negative energy flood is a 5th level spell that's very useful in terms of dealing damage or buffing your favorite bag of bones, but if you manage to kill a target regardless of size or type it turns into A zombie! The problem is what ever you kill with this won't be taking your commands right away so make sure you got your command undead handy and maybe a teleport spell!ĭanse Macabre is also an interesting spell allowing you to create 5 zombies or skeletons in a pinch but notice the restriction is only to small or medium corpses, so if you really want to recreate a more f'ed up version of lady and the tramp feel free (must bring your own spaghetti) the perks is when the spell ends the corpses de-animate and don't go crazy and eat the bard. Well look no further then Xanthar's spell selection! Most notably two spells Danse Macabre, and Negative Energy flood. wouldn't a zombie dragon mount be awesome? Wouldn't it be nice to play fetch with fluffy one more time? Are you tired of going to grave yards to get your corpses, wouldn't it be nice to go to a forest?
